I have spent the past week getting to know the beautiful children of the Luoyang Special Care Unit. Each nanny (ayi in Chinese) in the unit consistently cares for 2-3 children at a time so that the babies bond and form attachments to a regular caregiver. I can tell how much the nannies love the babies. They worry incessantly and bring them to the nurse or myself to be seen for the slightest runny nose or rash. The unit is a palliative care unit - however I get the feeling that some of these babies are too tenacious to give up on life anytime soon. They are truly remarkable human beings and I am so lucky to have the privilege to learn from them. I tried not to have favorites - but the two babies below captured my attention the most this week. Tomorrow I am off to a smaller city and a smaller unit in Jiaozuo - just about two hours north of Luoyang. I am looking forward to another adventure...miss you all.
